What is your favorite word to describe Love in Arabic?

This question to answer is hard, it’s like asking me what your favorite flavor of ice cream or food is. With Arabic we are fortunate enough to have very specific words that mean a specific type of love or a specific situation (of love). حب (hob) is the general one, that we use all the time. صبابة (sababa) comes from origin of صبي (sabi), which can be a very young love, or acting in a young way. شغف (shaghf) is when you first fall in love, and everything feels light and bubbly. جوى which is a very bitter flame of love that hurts you inside. هيام (hiam) when you are lost because of love, or lost in that love. And then there is the one that is highly used is عشق (ishq) it is very carnal and a penetrative kind of love. The word معشق (mushaq) which means pegging one piece of wood into another. So love can be said in many different ways where do you want to say it, how you want to say it, and to whom.

يصعب الإجابة على هذا السؤال لأنه باللغة العربية يوجد الكثير من الكلمات التي تعني الحب، إلا أن كل كلمة تعني إحساس معين وفي حالة معينة وتصف شعور معين. الهيام هو أن تكون ضائعاً في حب ذلك الشخص وأن تكون هائماً، بينما الصبابة تأتي من كلمة الصبي أو الصبينة فهي تصف الشعور الجديد والناعم ويكون به نوع من الصغر من حيث العمر، لذلك يقال “مغرم صبابة”، وهذا يشير إلى الصغر في العمر. ومن ثم كلمة جوى وهي الحرقة أو النار المتقدة منذ فترة بسبب الحب، وكذلك كلمة عشق المتداولة كثيراً من قبل الناس وتذكر كثيراً في الفن وهي تعني امتزاج شيء في شيء آخر جسدياً، مثالاً على ذلك ما يقال في اللهجة المحلية “خشب معشق” وهو ما يعني أن قطعتان من الخشب قد تداخلتا، ويعتمد استخدام الكلمة على ما المراد قوله وفي أي حالة.

من الكلمات الأخرى للحب هي كلمة هوى وهي من الهوى الدال على السقوط وكذلك الهواء وكلمة وجد من الوجدان أو الوجود، فيعتمد الكلام عند استخدام هذه المفردات فقد يشير الى إحساس مرهف ناعم أو إحساس بالطيران أو إحساس قديم أو جديد.

Which type of calligraphy excites you the most?

As an architect Kufi. It has very straight lines and very strict rules. It talks to my architectural logical brain. As an artist neskh, it has very straight undulating line. The rules are strict but the outcome is very soft, and plastic.

أي فن من فنون الخط هو الأقرب لقلبك؟

الخط الكوفي بالنسبة لي كمعماري يعجبني لأنه خطوط مستقيمة وذو زوايا ٩٠ +/- مما يخاطب عقلي العلمي، أما من الناحية الفنية فأنا أحب النسخ فعلى الرغم من أنه ذو قواعد وقوانين شديدة إلا أنه في نفس الوقت هو خط ناعم، وعند النظر إلى خط النسخ، تلاحظ سلاسة الاحرف ووجود نوع من الليونة والمرونة وهو ما يفتقده الخط الكوفي.

What are your favorite Arabic sayings?

My career and life is all around Arabic words and sayings. What comes to mind is, only the true ones are true. You cannot hide the sun with a sieve.

ما هي الامثال العربية المفضلة لديك؟

“لا يصح إلا الصحيح” و “الشمس لا تغطى بمنخل”: أحب من الأمثال العربية “لا يصح إلا الصحيح” لأنه بالنسبة لي يعني أن إذا كان الشخص ذو مسار صحي فسيكون ذلك جلياً وكذلك “الشمس لا تغطى بمنخل” ما يعني أن الشمس وهي دلالة على الحقيقة جلية ولا يمكن تغطيتها أو إخفاؤها بشيء.

Name three inspiring women, and what you find inspiring about them.

Cleopatra, with everything we know about Cleopatra and how she ruled and in the history of the world, we only focus on how beautiful she was. However, she was not. Cleopatra was a very intelligent, extremely cunning, and a survivor. Yet, in this day of age we cannot see a powerful woman without being “beautiful”. As we are very superficial, we must think if she did all this she must be beautiful. No one from her contemporaries has talked about her beauty, they only mentioned her intelligence, her tactics.

My grandmother, in the 1960s when my mother wanted to study to be a doctor, they didn’t have any medical schools in Bahrain at that point. My grandmother re-rooted herself and seven children, the eldest my mother who was 16 and my youngest uncle who was five years old from Bahrain to an apartment in Cairo so all her children could get an education. That is extremely inspiring.

The third one is not a specific woman, but every girl in the desert who sat and started weaving her house. Every Bedouin girl, would start at a very early age would start weaving their own house, so she is the maker of her house. That optimism or understanding, that not if I’m going to get married but when I get married this is my house and furniture. She was ready for life. I admire that of thinking and persistence.

اذكر لنا ٣ نساء ملهمات وما سبب ذلك

من الشخصيات النسائية التي أحبها هي كليوبترا، وما نعرفه عنها أنها ملكة أسطورية غيرت التاريخ، ودائماً كان يشار إليها بأنها كانت جميلة لتمكنها من النيل من رأسي أكبر قائدين عسكريين في روما، ومع الأسف هذه النظرة هي السائدة حالياً وهي أننا لا نستطيع أن نتصور امرأة قوية إلا وأن تكون جميلة. كليوبترا لم تكن جميلة، حيث كل من ذكرها قد أشاد بذكائها وشجاعتها وذكر ثقافتها ولم يتم ذكر جمالها، وحتى عندما تم العثور على ما يخصها، لم تكن تلك الموجودات ذات مقاييس جمالية كما يظنه الناس. ثاني امرأة ملهمة هي جدتي “رحمها الله” حيث أن في حقبة الستينات أرادت والدتي دراسة الطب ولكن لم يكن يوجد حينها مدرسة أو جامعة لتدريس الطب في البحرين، إلا أن جدتي قد قررت الانتقال للعيش من البحرين مع أطفالها السبعة وكان أكبرهم والدتي في حينها بعمر ١٦ سنة وأصغرهم خالي بعمر ٤-٥ سنوات، للعيش في شقة في مصر لضمان تلقي كافة أبنائها وبناتها الدراسة والعودة بعد الحصول على الشهادة. فهذا النوع من التفكير أنا أحترمه كثيراً وأحبه كثيراً. النموذج الثالث هي ليست بنت بحد ذاتها ولكن أي بنت بدوية قد قامت بغزل بيت الشعر الخاص بها في سن مبكرة حيث كان من الدارج في سن ٧ سنوات قديما بين البنات البدويات أن يغزلن بيوتهن، حيث كانت البنات في سن صغيرة يقمن بغزل بيوتهن وبناء بيوتهن، وعقب الانتهاء من ذلك يقمن بتأثيث بيوتهن. فهذا النوع من التفكير والإصرار أحبه، حيث لم يكن يفكرن مثلاً أنه إذا تزوجن فحينها سيغزلن بيوتهن، لا بل كان لديهن نظرة مستقبلية لغرل بيوتهن لهن ولأبنائهن وتحديد أماكن نوم أبنائهن في البيت مستقبلاً، فهذا النوع من النظرة التي يملأها الامل تعجبني كثيراً.

How has your mother influenced you positively?

By breaking the mold and carving my own destiny. My mother got married and moved to Kuwait from Bahrain at a young age. Her third child has down syndrome, and at that point they did not have facilities for the syndrome. She was a pediatrician, and decided to continue her education and focus on Down Syndrome and Genetics. She opened the Down Syndrome, Genetic, and Invitro center. She had to get the approval of the Sheikhs at Al Azhar Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. She took the cards that were dealt to her and did the best with it. Her scientific side was not do Invitro and genetics, but her religious side we should interfere with gods way. Yet she found a way to combine her faith with science for the future of this country. Even though she’s a doctor and I’m an artist, and we have a little in common in a career sense, but I admire she carved her own future.

كيف أثرت بك والدتك بهذا الشكل الإيجابي؟

هنالك فارق كبير بيني وبين والدتي، فوالدتي دكتورة وقد أتت للكويت من البحرين بعد زواجها وهي كانت طبيبة أطفال، وقد قدر الله سبحانه وتعالى أن يكون طفلها الثالث من ذوي متلازمة الداون، وحينها لم يكن العلم متاحاً حول هذه المتلازمة، وقد درست وأنهت درجتي الماجستير والدكتوراه في علم الوراثه في مجال متلازمة الداون لتأمين مستقبلاً جيداً لطفلها، وفي نفس الوقت مساعدة أطفال الاخرين. وخلال تلك المرحلة قد تخصصت في دراسة أطفال الانابيب وقد تمكنت من الموازنة بين عقلها العلمي من ناحية أطفال الانابيب وشرعية ذلك من الناحية الدينية، وقد توصلت لمرحلة فكرية تمحورت حول لماذا لا يتم التوفيق بين الشرع والطب فيما يخص أطفال الانابيب. فالذي اكتسبته من والدتي كونها دكتوره وأنا معماري وفنان هو أنني أنظر لما وهبني إياه الله سبحانه وتعالى من مواهب وقدرات وكذلك نقاط ضعف ومن ثم سلك مسلكي الخاص بناء على ذلك وأن أكتب قصتي وأروي روايتي التي تميزني عن غيري وذلك وفقاً للمعطيات التي وهبني إياها الله سبحانه وتعالى.

What is your favorite line of poetry or lyric of a song describing a woman?

I have a lot of them because these are two topics that enjoy a lot love and women. One of the most interesting one for me, is by Antar bin Shadad, a historical character known for being brutish solider. When he describes his love, Abla, he describes her in battle:

“I remembered you when spears were cascading down on me

And white Indian swords were dripping with my blood

I wanted to kiss the blades because they shimmer like your lips when you smile”

That dichotomy of blood and war, from a large overbearing, to a delicate aspect of his love.

ما هو بيت الشعر أو الاغنية المفضل لديك عن المرأة؟

ولقد ذكرتكِ والرماح نواهل مني

وبيض الهند تقطر من دمي

فوددت تقبيل السيوف لأنها لمعت كبارق ثغرك المتبسم

وصف المرأة والشعر عن المرأة أو الحب هو من الأمور التي أحبها كثيراً، لذلك من الصعب اختيار شيء محدد ولكن اعتقد بأن من القصائد التي تعجبني كثيراً كونها تأتي من مصدر غير متوقع وهو عنتر بن شداد وهو من الشخصيات التاريخية المعروف عنها أنه كان فارس شجاع وطويل وضخم وأسود وغير وسيم ولكن فجأة عندما تقرأ شعره تجده مرهفاً جداً وفي غاية الرقة، فهو عندما يصف عبلة وهو في الحرب فيقول لها “ولقد ذكرتكِ والرماح نواهل مني وبيض الهند تقطر من دمي فوددت تقبيل السيوف لأنها لمعت كبارق ثغرك المتبسم”. فبينما تنهال الرماح عليه هو يذكر شعرها وبينما يقطر دمه بسبب السيوف هو يذكر بشرتها الجميلة وشفاهها الحمراء وعند بريق السيف يذكر فمها المبتسم، فما يعجبني هو المتضادات بين كونه من وكيفية وصفه لها وذلك من جماليات الشعر العربي بالنسبة لي.

Let’s finish with any words you would like to share for all the Mothers out there?

Quoting a hadith from the Prophet Mohammed, “Heaven is under the feet of your mother”, she is regarded in that space. I truly believe in that.

The other one is a poem by a contemporary poet Saeed Akil:

“My mother my angle

Is the love that remains forever

Your hands are still my swing, and I’m still a child.”

These two sayings give you an indication of the influences that I’ve had in my life and the love of word and the Arabic language.

ولا تزل يداكِ أرجوحتي ولا أزل ولد

أكثر مأثورتين أحبهما حول الأمهات هو حديث عن الني صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو “الجنة تحت أقدام الأمهات” وهو يشير لمكانة الأم في الأخرة وهي أن الجنة تحت قدميها، لما أجزلته من عطاء لأبنائها. المأثور الثاني هو شعر للشاعر سعيد عقل وهو شاعر معاصر كتب “أمي يا ملاكي يا حبي الباقي إلى الأبد ولا تزل يداكِ أرجوحتي ولا أزل ولد” وهو يعني أننا مهما كبرنا فلا نزال صغار ولا نزال أطفال.

As an Arab Muslim man, I’m always represented badly in the media. When I started working on my artwork I wanted to do something Arabic, and Islamic. As they are the same language they are usually tied together. Growing up as a male we are not trained how to deal with love or emotions. It is considered a weakness. That’s why when I design my carpets or jewelry I always us the word love. Just so as men we can be more comfortable with the existence of the word around us. I don’t know why we are trained in that manner. I use the Quran or Prophet’s sayings in my design, so Internationally the audience can see other facets to a Muslim man.
